First edition. Hardy was a commissioner of the General Pearl and Coral Fishery Association of London. He traveled to Mexico to study the pearl potential of the Gulf of California. His book is considered a valuable source of information on the little-known region of Sonora and Lower California. The work is also of cartographic significance, as Hardy's Map of Sonora and Gulf of California is the first survey and chart of the mouth of the Colorado and Gila Rivers.
