Not Under Forty.

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1936. 8vo, gilt-stamped orange cloth. [xii], 149 pp. Uncut pages.

First edition, limited to 333 copies signed by the author. This copy is number 96. The only collection of Cather’s essays published in her lifetime, containing six works reflecting mainly on life and literature prior to World War I. Cather believed that the essays would have “little interest for people under forty years of age.” In this she was mistaken, and the book remains well-regarded today. Included here are A Chance Meeting, The Novel Démeublé, 148 Charles Street, Miss Jewett, "Joseph and His Brothers," and Katherine Mansfield.

CONDITION: Near fine, bright copy in good jacket, uncut pages, endpapers with very minor discoloration, dust jacket with flaps that extend over top and bottom edges which have tears and losses, main portion of jacket with half-inch chip at head of spine, and three half inch tears. Lacking slip-case.
