Demons Imps & Fiends. Drawings by Leonard baskin.

The Gehenna Press, 1976. Imperial 8vo, marbled paper spine and boards with gilt black morocco spine strip. Illustrated title leaf, 1 p. of text, 19 drawings from line cuts printed on various papers, some blue; 2 illus. in red and black, others printed in black only.

A marvelously captivating book of monsters. The text consists solely of a passage from St. Bernard of Clairvaux, which serves as a sort of preface: “But in the cloister, under the eyes of the Brethren who read there, what profit is there in those ridiculous monsters, in that marvellous and deformed comeliness, that comely deformity? To what purpose are those unclean apes, those fierce lions, those monstrous centaurs, those half-men, those striped tigers, those fighting knights, those hunters winding their horns? Many bodies are there seen under one head, or again, many heads to a single body.” From the colophon: “450 copies of this book were printed on various interesting papers during the autumn of 1976. The pressman was Harold McGrath. This is copy number 360.” Bound by Gray Parrot in splendid “hellfire” marbled paper, with his ticket affixed to the lower inside corner of the rear paste-down.
