The Story of Klondike. Published for the Information of the Interested.

[Portland, Maine?]: [Alaska-Yukon-Klondike Gold Syndicate?], [1897]. 8vo., pictorial wrappers. 32 pp., illus.

A rare Klondike gold rush promotional pamphlet, replete with information for the prospective miner, including an account of the region by Joaquin Miller.

This pamphlet was presumably published by the Maine-based Alaska-Yukon-Klondike Gold Syndicate, as portions of its content promote the firm in some way. It includes a general account of the mining scene, as well as various testimonials, and accounts of those who struck it rich, drawn from various periodicals, including a number of Maine newspapers. A section entitled Joaquin Miller Dazzled With Gold reprints a series of letters that he wrote as a member of “the Journal expedition to the Klondike gold fields,” which originally appeared in the New York Journal. Illustrated throughout with scenes of life in the gold fields, sketches of various mining techniques, and several portraits of miners. The front wrapper bears a striking illustration of a prospector wearing a fur parka, braced for the Yukon winter. Although identified as the “Second edition” on the front wrapper, this would seem a marketing ploy, as we find no evidence of another edition. OCLC #15986164, locating only one copy, at the Newberry Library.

CONDITION: Very good, a few small chips at edges.
