Souvenir of Lead: Black Hills Metropolis. South Dakota Series No. 1.

Lead, South Dakota: J.E. Meddaugh, 1892. The Albertype Co., New York. Oblong 12mo, original brown cloth with cord ties at spine, gilt title on upper cover, stamped cloth. 25 pp. Image size: 5.5” x 4”.

A fine view book consisting of 23 photomechanical views of what was then the largest settlement in the Black Hills (through from the looks of it, not quite the Metropolis it’s billed as). Photographs depict everything from the interior of the clothing store to Wild Bill Hickock’s grave. J.E. Meddaugh had a brief, but important, career as a frontier photographer. In addition to capturing scenes of white settlements, he is the only photographer known to have photographed the Ghost Dance, and was among the first to arrive on the scene following the Wounded Knee Massacre.

CONDITION: Very good, minor rubbing to the extremities. An attractive copy.
