McHenry, James.

Regulations to be observed in the delivery and distribution of fuel and straw to the Garrisons on the Sea Coast, and Recruiting Parties.

[Philadelphia]: [War-Office of the United States], [1797]. Broadside, 7.75” x 12.5”. Watermarked and on laid paper.

A rare Federal-era broadside order regulating the delivery and distribution of fuel and straw for heat and bedding to US army personnel at coastal garrisons. Signed in ink by James McHenry, Secretary of War under George Washington (and later John Adams).

Earlier in his career McHenry served as a secretary to George Washington during the Revolutionary War, was a delegate from Maryland to Continental Congress and a signer of the US Constitution. Baltimore’s Fort McHenry is named for him.

Manuscript annotation on the verso. Evans 33097 records a variant edition printed by William Ross. Electronic/microform versions only in OCLC, but other searches uncover copies at the American Antiquarian Society and the Library of Congress, only the latter signed in ink.

CONDITION: Very good.
