An Examination of Phrenology; in two lectures, delivered to the students of the Columbian College, District of Columbia, February, 1837.

Washington City [D.C]: B. Homans, Printer, 1837. 8vo, recently re-backed, original purple cloth covers. 70 pp., 7 lithographic plates (frontis. and 6 folding).

First edition of this attack on the doctrines of phrenology. Sewall, a professor of anatomy at Columbian College in Washington, attempts to show the degree to which phrenology “is reconcilable with the anatomical structure and organization of the brain, the cranium, and other parts concerned.” The frontispiece illustrates the “name, form, size and position of the phrenological organs.” The other plates depict various characteristics of the skull. Inscribed by Sewall to “G. C. Shattuck, M.D.” on the flyleaf. Rare. OCLC records just two copies. A second edition was published in Boston in 1839.
