First edition of the first collected works of the father of modern physics, edited by Carlo Manolessi.

These volumes are the fruit of the vast efforts made after Galileo’s death to gather and preserve his work. Much of the content was compiled by his friend and student, Vincenzio Viviani, and includes all of Galileo’s major writings (except of course the Diologo, which was banned for its heretical comparison of the Copernican and Ptolomaic systems, and did not appear in the Opere until 1744). Viviani had planned to publish the collected works on his own, but was unable to realize his ambition, and the task fell to Manolessi. The second volume contains important selections from Galileo’s correspondences, as well as writings on Galileo by others. Some never before published writings include Galileo’s letter to Padre Grembergero and his treatise on the hydrostatic balance, more commonly known as “la Bilancetta.” The Opere is a testament to the profundity, both scientific and cultural, of Galileo’s life and work. A cornerstone of the scientific revolution, it was the form in which Newton and other important scientific figures studied Galileo.
