Cunard Havana Service.

New York: Cunard, 1929. Brochure. 7 3/4” x 9”, folded to 4 1/8” x 9”, decorative color front and back panels, 16 pp., numerous b&w and color illus., 1 37” x 25” fold-out deck plan, printed on both sides, folded to 3 7/8” x 9”, additional single sheet brochure folded to 3 1/4” x 6 1/4” inserted.

A beautifully designed art deco guide to pre-revolutionary Havana, Cuba, where Cunard cruise ships from New York arrived twice a week to enjoy “American Luxury with Continental Allure” as evidenced by three yacht clubs, golf and tennis clubs, the Jockey Club and the National Casino.

The Caronia sailed on Saturdays, the Carmania on Wednesdays and the Mauretania traveled for a special $200.00 round trip in February. Each side of the deck plan has diagrams of the Caronia and Carmania, the A, B and C decks, the gymnasium, nursery, smoking room, and one of the Thermotak Ventilation System, which is touted as good for the tropics, as sea breezes are drawn into each room. Included also is a 6 1/4” x 4 1/4” image of each ship and a Schedule of Rates; a 9-day tour on the A-Deck with a stay at the Hotel Plaza cost $524.00.

Images of a Spruced-up Malecon, Fifth Avenue in Miramar, Jockey Club grandstands, sailing, fountains, and pavilions illustrate a bygone era, as do the interior images of the ships’ bedrooms, smoke room, verandah and dining room. Rural Cuba is touted for its tobacco fields, fine tarpon fishing and crystal-clear bathing water, accessed by trains and the “Velvet Highway”. A sailing schedule is included on the last page.

Inserted is a colorful, separately published leaflet entitled The Cunard Line 1929-1930 Havana Service. It advertises the Carefree, Sunny Delight of Havana. “Do you love your Paris? Then you will make straight for a sidewalk cafe on the Prado.” “All this business about having to stand the rigors of a northern and unhealthy winter is as old fashioned as antimaccassars.” “Bon Vivants who like to put a little something on cing finale once in a while without going all the way to Monte Carlo find that the Casino at Marianao puts up sport to the King’s taste.” Havana had simply become the thing to do, and it could be done twice a week on the Cunard line.

CONDITION: Very good, extremities of front and back panels; rubbed; very good map, a 1 1/2” tear on top left corner where attached inside of back cover, still intact; inserted leaflet good, light brown toning and a stain on one side, bumped corner, wear at extremities.
