New York: the MacMillan Company, 1947. Hardcover. 8vo, orange cloth, blue spine title. 326 pp. 1 green 8vo program, 2 invitations, hand addressed envelope. Housed in sage-green buckram clamshell box.

First edition, first printing (so stated) of James Michener’s 1947 Pulitzer-winning first novel which also inspired the classic musical South Pacific. Inscribed on the title page as follows: “St. Patrick’s Day 17 M 77 To Bob Teitelman, a rare sight of a rare edition. James A. Michener.” Inscribed by Michener when he was presented with the Medal of Achievement by the Philadelphia Art Alliance on March 17, 1977. Robert Teitelman was a financial journalist, editor and author of Bloodsport as well as a noted ceramics collector from New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Included is a program and an invitation to Robert Teitelman for the Presentation of the Medal of Achievement.

CONDITION: Good, title page apparently re-inserted after detaching and now somewhat askew, minor rubbing, contents toned as usual; good dust jacket, chipping and wear at extremities, .25” loss at head of spine, .25” hole at lower left edge of spine, .5” loss at top right corner of front panel, 1.5” tear on upper left corner of black flap with no loss, corners clipped on front dj flap but price intact and no loss to any other printing.
