[Washington, D.C.?], [ca. 1865]. Albumen print on paperboard mount, 362 x 305 mm, plus margins. In original oval walnut frame, lacking glass. With a recent photograph of the key to the photograph, which is often missing.

The large version of this composite photograph, published in two sizes, of some 159 U.S. legislators who voted to abolish slavery, including President Lincoln and VP Hamlin, marking an extraordinary moment, long-awaited by the enslaved and abolitionists.

The 13th Amendment to the Constitution—which passed the Senate on 8 April 1864, the House on 31 Jan. 1865, and was ratified on 6 Dec. 1865—formally abolished slavery in the U.S. The landmark Amendment declared: “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.” The amendment, which was passed at the end of the Civil War prior to the reintegration of Southern states into the Union, came on the heels of President Lincoln’s promulgation of the Emancipation Proclamation, which moved toward the abolition of slavery but did not fully effect it. Along with the 14th and 15th amendments, the 13th took great strides in broadening the civil rights of African Americans.

This marvelous photomontage is appealing both for its historical significance and well as its kaleidoscopic visual effect.

CONDITION: Very good, strong tones, one crack in mount to edge of image.
