St. Andrew’s Bay, Florida—“Lovely St. Andrew’s-by-the-Sea.” Plat of Building Lots at St. Andrew’s Bay, Fla.

St. Andrew’s Bay: The St. Andrew’s Bay R.R. & Land Co., [ca. 1887]. Broadsheet, 16” x 16”, engraving and text on recto; plat map and text on verso.

A rare broadsheet promoting lands owned by the St. Andrews Bay Rail Road & Land Company, with a plat map showing the lots available, presumably in present day Panama City.

The recto consists of an engraving reproducing a rather Italianate painting of fashionably dressed ladies boating, with text below excerpted from the Baltimore Manufacturers’ Record from 1886 in which a gentleman praises the beautiful lakes around St. Andrew’s Bay, its fertile lands, and the bay itself. The author recounts an unforgettable tour he was given of the bay by an Alabama State Senator, following which he dined on oysters harvested there. Also included is a Cincinnati newspaper man’s impressions of St. Andrew’s, excerpted from the Cincinnati American Sportsman of 1887. The correspondent covers the bay’s “delightful climate,” its booming real estate, and writes: “A thriving and prosperous place, located at one of the most beautiful spots I ever saw, with an atmosphere so salubrious and bracing that northern people are at once made wild with delight. There are over a thousand people, a good hotel, miles of streets already made, and many others laid out.”

The plat map on the verso consists of thirty-two blocks of forty lots each laid out in a perfect grid. The text claims that these lots are “a first-class speculative investment” that will yield a 1,000% profit within a year. The St. Andrew’s Bay population is currently on the rise, it is noted, and the company is reserving one half of their lands for future rise in value. While the single purchaser is only allowed to buy two blocks, the company permits the formation of local clubs to purchase up to 10 lots. The sizes of the properties are detailed as well as the various terms and stipulations of the company’s limited offer.

No copies recorded in OCLC.
