Stamped Indelibly : A Collection of Rubberstamp Prints.
New York: William Katz, 1967. 4to, tan linen. With 15 tipped-in rubberstamp prints, many signed in pencil. Edition limited to 225 copies numbered and signed by Katz. This copy is number 194, and is additionally inscribed to John and Mary Updike, Ipswich, Mass., 1972. With fifteen rubber stamp prints by Robert Creeley, Tom Wesselmann, Red Grooms & Kenneth Koch, Marisol, Robert Indiana, Josef Levi, Gerard Malanga, Allen Jones, Andy Warhol, Peter Saul, Claes Oldenberg, Allen Ginsberg and John Willenbecher, most signed in pencil by the artist. Born in New York, William “Bill” Katz is a designer-architect who has served for decades as an aesthetic confidant to a number of the artworld’s movers and shakers, including Robert Indiana, Cy Twombly and Jasper Johns. After graduating from Johns Hopkins University, he moved to Manhattan where he soon became associated with art world luminaries like Indiana, Marisol Escobar and Andy Warhol, and assisted artists in their projects. As he would recall, “I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do…So I would work in the studio, stretch canvases, run errands.” As Indiana’s studio assistant for over a decade and as well as his partner for a time, Katz was instrumental in the conception of Indiana’s iconic Love sculpture, and would also initiate and undertake print projects for Indiana such as Numbers (1968), which features poems by Robert Creeley. Katz has designed exhibitions, studios, and living spaces for artists Agnes Martin, Robert Rauschenberg, Anselm Kiefer, Francesco Clemente, Kiki Smith and Miquel Barceló. He has also designed sets and costumes for contemporary dance companies throughout the world. A marvelous pop art book inscribed to novelist and art critic John Updike and his wife Mary.
