The Highly Important Prophesies of the Celebrated Madame Lenormand, of France, (The Fortune-teller of Napoleon Bonaparte) Concerning the Past, the Present, and the Future of the United States of America!

New York: Coster & Guttmann; Cameron & Co. Steam Printers, 57 Ann St., 1861. Broadside, 11.75” x 18.5”.

A broadside produced during the Civil War advertising a pamphlet of prophesies by French fortuneteller Madame Lenormand—the publishers apparently sensing an opportunity in the uncertainty and fear surrounding the War.

Advertising a pamphlet entitled The Highly Important Prophesies of the Celebrated Madame Lenormand, of France, this broadside touts the “professional prophesies” by the popular French fortuneteller Marie Lenormand (1772–1843), who most famously was said to have predicted the rise of Napoléon Bonaparte. The publishers note that “Lenormand has for more than 50 years therein revealed The Rise of Our Union, The Facts of the Past, The Question of the Day, The opening of the Civil War, The Events of the Future, Etc. Etc. Etc.”—“the past, the present and the future of the United States of America.”

Authoring many works and practicing fortunetelling for over forty years, Lenormand was among the most renowned cartomancers of her day. When Napoléon became Emperor, he bestowed upon her one million francs. Lenormand gave advice to many notables, including Alexander I, Tsar of Russia. Coming under the scrutiny of the fledgling French Republic’s revolutionary leaders, she was imprisoned several times—but was eventually released. In 1793, her salon was visited by Marat, Saint-Just and Robespierre. She is said to have predicted violent deaths for all three, which came true. Lenormand would also predict the fall of Napoleon. Lenormand was highly influential in the wave of French cartomancy which began in the late eighteenth century, and remained popular and lived off her craft until she died in 1843 in Paris.

No copies in OCLC. Moreover, the pamphlet itself is rare, with just one copy recorded, at AAS.
