San Antonio, Texas: International & Great Northern R. R.; Maverick-Clarke Litho. Co., 1897. 8vo brochure, 8.25” x 4.25”, folded into 12 panels. Verso map, 23” x 15”, plus margins.

A scarce brochure with map published by a leading livestock shipping railroad for Texas livestock owners attending association meetings in San Antonio in March of 1897.

The map, depicting Texas, a portion of Mexico, and states along the Mississippi River corridor as well as Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska, shows the “International Route” of the International and Great Northern Railroad which links Laredo on the U.S.-Mexican border, San Antonio, Galveston, Houston, Austin and other Texas locales. The larger network of rail-lines is shown stemming from Chicago in the north and leading all the way south to Mexico City via the Mexican Nation R.R.

The text consists of a Program of the Texas Livestock Association (which included such subjects of discussion as,“The Swine Industry,” “The Cattle Industry of Texas,” “Texas Fever and Quarantine Regulations,” “Feed Products,” etc.); the order of business of the Cattle Raisers’ Association of Texas (including a Grand Barbecue, Mexican Suppers, Military Drills by Zouaves and Belknap Rifles, and concerts by military bands); a historical sketch of San Antonio, “The Alamo City”; advertisements for the International Route (via the International & Great Northern R.R.), dubbed “the shortest and best live stock route to northern markets”; other advertisements for livestock routes and markets, excursions (via railroad) to Monterey and Mexico City, Cattle Car Companies, and Live Stock Commission Agents and Merchants.

Samuel Maverick—pioneer Texan who signed the Texas Declaration of Independence—established the Maverick Printing Co. in 1874, following which the prominent businessman Robert Clarke bought into the business. Under the new name Maverick-Clarke, the firm found success and branched out into producing county record books, paper boxes, bank checks and forms, as well as office supplies and furniture.
