Portland: Chisholm Brothers, Publishers, 1888. 16mo, gilt-stamped gray cloth, 6 pp. ads, 112 pp., 5 pp. ads., numerous b&w illus., one 10.5” x 12” foldout map. Early ownership inscription on front free endpaper reading: “Helen V W Davidson Fine Descriptions of Placentia Isles, page 101.” Typed note dated 11 March 1924 from Portland, Maine bookseller A. J. Huston laid in.

An attractive copy of this scarce Mount Desert guide-book. Sweetser describes the island in great detail, with accounts of settlers, legends, real estate transactions, geography, walks, drives, hotels, name origins, local farmers and much more. Bar Harbor, Seal Harbor, Northeast and Southwest Harbors have their own chapters. The topographical map is entitled “Mt. Desert Island, Maine, From U. S. Coast Survey. Issued by Maine Central R. R. Co.” Included are two tables: Heights above Mean High Water, and Summer Level of Lakes and Ponds” and other features of interest to the summer visitor, such as the islets, coves, mountains, and steamship routes.
