Inks of the California Formulae. Manufactured from Raw Materials to Finished Product. [cover title: California Ink Co., Inc. San Francisco].
West Berkeley, California: California Ink Company, [ca. 1922]. 12mo (4.5” x 7.75”), illustrated cardstock wrappers, cloth spine. 118 pp, index, numerous plates printed in black and one of various ink colors, 1 full-color plate, 1 b&w illus. A handsome trade catalog of printing and lithographic inks, including samples of half-tone, semi-transparent, opaque, two-shade sepia, book, poster, soft, medium and heavy body inks printed over the same image of a cowboy on bucking bronco. The typography is impressive as each sample is printed on the type of paper most suited to its use, and the tint samples are printed over images of canned products for sale such as pastes, compounds, tablet gums. A full-color reproduction of a Del Monte Canned Fruits oil painting opens the sequence. The catalog concludes with cover inks, printer’s rollers, and miscellaneous merchandise. California Ink originated in 1891 as part of the Union Oil Company, moved to West Berkeley ca. 1900, incorporated 1919, produced the first red lithographic ink during WWI, and the first magnetic ink for check printing in 1950. It continues as a division of the Flint Ink Co. in Detroit. Just copy recorded in OCLC. A very appealing item. CONDITION: Very good, back wrapper slightly sprung, clean and bright interior.
