Frederick Douglass Lif och Samtid. [Life and Times of Frederick Douglass].

Stockholm: N.J. Schedin förlag, 1895. 8vo, original green publisher’s cloth, title in gold and black on front cover and spine. 733, [1] pp., [14] plate leaves. Bookbinder’s name blind-stamped on the lower back cover: “Joh. Nilssons Bokbinderi Stockholm.”.

First Swedish edition of Douglass’s last book, exemplifying the author’s abiding international reputation long after the fight to end slavery in America had ended. It concludes with chapters mainly devoted to his role as Consul General to Haiti, and records his death on February 20, 1895, the year this edition was published.

Life and Times of Frederick Douglass “did not excite the admiration of reviewers or sell widely, as had his first two autobiographies, but [it] maintained Douglass’s conviction that his had been a ‘life of victory, if not complete, at least assured.’ Life and TImes shows Douglass dedicated in the ideal of building a racially integrated America in which skin color would cease to determine an individual’s social value and economic options.” (Andrews, Oxford Companion to African American Literature).

CONDITION: Very good, lightly rubbed.
