Mount Washington and Other Summits of the Alps of New England as Seen From the Observatory and Western Promenade. Portland, Me.

Portland, Maine: Loring, Short & Harmon, Booksellers & Stationery, 1874. Lithographic map, 29” x 5.75”, folding into 12mo (6” x 3.5”) covers, printed green paper over boards. Advertisements on the back cover for “Abner Lowell, Watches, Fine Jewelry” and the publisher, Loring, Short & Harmon.

A scarce and very appealing profile map of the White Mountains and their foothills in Maine—dubbed here “the Alps of New England”—as seen and sketched by a local silversmith from two different vantage points in Portland.

The two views are arranged one above the other. The upper profile, taken from the higher vantage point of the Portland Observatory on the eastern end of the city, extends from Wiggin’s or Table Mt., in Parsonsfield, Maine across myriad peaks to Mt. Moriah, in Gorham, New Hampshire and a few unnamed peaks to the north. The names of most peaks, in some cases their distance from Portland, are noted in the sky above, along with a few other features. In addition to mountains and hills in Maine and New Hampshire, the view locates the town hall and congregational church in Gorham, Maine; Westbrook Seminary; and a “pine tree on Lowell’s Hill, Windham, Me.” The lower profile, taken from the lower vantage point on “the Western Promenade near Hon. J. B. Brown’s,” extends from the vicinity of Ossipee Mountain in New Hampshire in the south to Gorham, New Hampshire and somewhat further north. Appearing in the foreground are two buildings representing Gorham, Maine and two buildings representing Standish, Maine.

Silversmith, jeweler, and watchmaker Abner Lowell (1812–1883) was born in Portland, Maine. From 1823 to 1825, Lowell apprenticed with Oliver Gerrish of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, a noted watch and clock maker. Lowell worked as a silversmith and watchmaker in Portland (1834–36); as a partner with William Senter in Portsmouth as Lowell & Senter (1837–69); and as a silversmith and watchmaker in Portland as A. Lowell & Co. (1870–77), in association with his sons Oliver and John. He retired some time around 1880. This map seems to be the only such work to his credit.

OCLC records just five copies.
