CONDITION: Good, expertly rebacked, some foxing and soiling to wrappers, short tear in fore-edge of front wrapper, occasional minor foxing to contents. First edition of the first children’s edition of Uncle Tom’s Cabin. A blend of narrative verse and extracts from the original, “this little work is designed to adapt Mrs. Stowe’s touching narrative to the understanding of the youngest readers and to foster in their hearts a generous sympathy for the wronged negro race of America.” In addition to publishing the first edition of Uncle Tom’s Cabin in 1852, as well as the present adaptation, Boston publisher John P. Jewett (1814–1884) published a number of other anti-slavery works, including A North-side View of Slavery : The Refugee (1856), Anthony Burn’s : A History (1856) and History of the Oberlin-Wellington Rescue (1859).
