Androscoggin.

Portland: Falmouth Publishing House, 1940. 8vo, blue cloth, paper title labels. 52 pp.

First edition of Hartley’s second volume of poetry, inscribed as follows: “Dear Claire & John, I love this new baby & hope you can too. Devotedly, Marsden.” The son of famed patron of modernism, Mabel Dodge Luhan, John Ganson Evans (1902–1978) was a sometime poet, novelist, and government official. His wife, Claire Spencer Evans (1896–1987), was a novelist and painter, formerly married to Harrison Smith, the publisher of her first two novels. Hartley was a guest on at least one occasion at the Evans’s home in West Brooksville, Maine and likely presented this book to them while visiting. Hartley was one of many important artists and writers in Mabel Dodge Luhan’s circle. Commenting on her gift for bringing artists together and fostering their work, he described Luhan as “a creator of creators.” An appealing association copy.

CONDITION: Good, covers spotted, moderate wear; dust jacket good.
