New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1918. 8vo (8.125” x 5.5”), black paper over boards with navy blue cloth backstrip, author & title in gold on spine and front cover. 71 pp., 3 plates including the frontis. reproducing drawings by the author.

First edition of Gibran’s first book in English, inscribed by the author in the year of publication as follows: “To Hesper le Galliene from Kahlil Gibran October 28 1918.” Hesper Le Galliene was the daughter of English poet Richard Le Galliene (1866–1947), who is mainly remembered for his contributions to The Yellow Book and as one of Oscar Wilde’s lovers. Hesper’s charming Illustrated bookplate is affixed to the front paste-down. Inscribed or signed copies of the first edition of The Madman are exceptionally rare, with no copies recorded at auction in American Book Prices Current since at least 1975.

CONDITION: Good, moderate wear, upper right corners bumped, a few white specks on covers, top edge of text block darkened, spine title a bit faded, as usual, but legible; toning from laid-in newspaper review to pages 14-15; lacking the rare dust jacket.
