[Free frank signature on an address panel].

Circa 1799. Autograph signature on an address panel, 2.25” x 4”, with name of recipient and “New York” in a secretarial hand. Mounted on a portion of a leaf removed from an 19th century autograph album, with manuscript annotations. Autographs of Adelaide Queen Dowager and the Duke of Cambridge on envelopes affixed to verso.

An appealing example of the free frank signature of John Adams on a clipped panel addressed to one Arthur M. Walter[s]. A later collector’s note at the top reads: “A frank of John Adams 2d President of the United Sates of America about 1799.” A note on the mount below the panel reads “John Adams 2d President of the United States.” An early newspaper clipping regarding the salaries of the President, Vice President, Secretaries, etc. is mounted to the right of the panel.

CONDITION: Very good, signature strong and clear.
