A rare eighteenth-century biography of “the Lily of Quito” printed in Puebla, Mexico, first published under the title Gloriosa corona de Madrid (Madrid, 1669).

Orphaned by her noble parents and raised by her elder sister and her husband, Saint Mariana of Jesus de Paredes (1618-1645) was a recluse, living at home, wholly committed to God and prayer, only leaving to attend divine services in church or when charity toward her neighbor required it. It is believed she was favored with extraordinary mystical gifts in support of her apostolate, and by means of the Sign of the Cross or by sprinkling holy water restored many sick persons to health, even reputedly raising a dead woman to life. When plague broke out in Ecuador, she offered herself as a sacrifice to God in behalf of the sick. She died shortly afterwards from the plague, age twenty-eight. After her death, a beautiful lily reputedly sprouted forth from her blood, and she came to be known as the "Lily of Quito." She was beatified by Pope Pius IX in 1853 and canonized by Pope Pius XII in 1950.

Worldcat records just four copies, at the JCB, Notre Dame, Indiana Univ. and Dibam Biblioteca Nacional de Chile.
