John Marin, Cape Split, [Maine,] ‘51.

Cape Split, Maine, 1951 [later printing, circa 1970s?]. Original silver gelatin print, 7.75” x 7.625” plus margins. Titled, signed, and stamped by Daniell on the verso.

A beautiful example of this remarkable photograph of modernist painter John Marin (1870–1953) on the porch of his summer cottage at Cape Split, Maine, taken by Daniell in 1951, just two years before Marin’s death.

George Daniell (1911–2002) was born in Yonkers, New York, studied painting at Yale and the Arts Students League, and worked as a freelance photographer for Time, Life, and other magazines. Among the many subjects of his lens were such artists and writers as Marin, Georgia O’Keefe, Tennessee Williams, and Berenice Abbott, all of whom were his friends. The photograph offered here is arguably his most striking and memorable portrait of Marin.
