[Hollywood, Florida photo album.]

[Hollywood, Florida, ca. 1925]. 24mo (5.5” x 8.5”), dark brown leather covers and rawhide tie at spine. 35 silver prints (4.75” x 6”, plus margins), including 5 photomontages. Each photo numbered and inscribed in the negative. One photo inscribed on the verso.

A booster photo album documenting the development of Hollywood, Florida in the 1920s, showing its progress from undeveloped land to full-fledged resort community.

Featured in the leadoff image of this album is developer Joseph Young (1882–1934), who arrived in South Florida in 1920 to create his own Florida dream city. Young purchased thousands of acres of land and named his new town, "Hollywood by the Sea"—to distinguish it from his other real-estate venture, "Hollywood in the Hills" in New York. After spending millions on the construction of the town, he was elected its first mayor in 1925. The new town soon became home to northern "snowbirds."

Two of the earliest images included here show what would be “Hollywood Boulevard” in June 1915, picturing a man standing in a dense undergrowth and forest; and Hollywood Boulevard under construction in Nov. 1921—the town still in its infancy—showing the building site after it was cleared, with laborers working the soil. Another image of Hollywood Boulevard, taken in April 1925—the year of the city’s founding—shows many buildings, a railroad crossing and numerous cars. By this later date Hollywood was a bustling city.

Among the many subjects pictured are homes in Hollywood (including two photos in photomontage form); interiors and exteriors of an Electric and Water Plant; Symmes Shops & Residence Building on the boardwalk; individual homes; construction sites; large dredging machines at work; an architectural rendering for a Bathing Casino, to be built by Hollywood Land & Water Co.; Hollywood Furniture Co.; U.S. President Harding greeting the “Hollywood sales force at Hollywood Hotel” (picturing dozens of people outside the hotel); the Hollywood Theater; an elevated view of Hollywood Circle; Hollywood houses under construction; the Ingram Arcade; a beach scene where many are luxuriating; “Hollywood at night along Dixie Highway”; Hollywood Depot; the storefront of the Hollywood Publishing Co.; Hollywood Public School (showing scores of children and some teachers outside the school); Hollywood’s U.S. Post Office; the city’s Administration Building; an architectural rendering of a hotel “for Hollywood By The Sea” by R. U. Bush & Hunter, architects of Indianapolis; Hollywood State Bank; Hollywood Hotel (seen from afar); and dozens of individuals taking a cruise on a “Hollywood-By-The-Sea” tour boat.

A rare promotional photo album for this east coast of Florida resort town.
