Sayre, PA: Shaw Brothers Sports Enterprises, 1964. 8vo (9” x 6”), printed orange wrappers. [8] pp., illus., score card on inside of rear wrapper CONDITION: Wrappers split along lower half of spine, dampstaining and light rubbing to wrappers; loss to margin at lower right corner of first leaf, faint vertical crease throughout, foxing to last page.

A scarce “official souvenir program” for an African American exhibition basketball team whose repertoire included trick-shots and trick-dribbling, imitations, “comedy at its finest,” “classy ball handling,” and more.

This work opens with a word from the team’s owners, addressed to the basketball team’s many fans throughout America and Canada. Introducing the 1964–65 basketball season, the owners note: “the 1964–65 edition of the Harlem Astronauts is the finest ever. We believe this is the finest basketball show to ever hit the hardwood… It is our fondest hope that this team will bring many laughs and thrills to thousands from coast to coast. Every heart should be filled with laughter and the Astronauts will strive to have your overflowing.” Profiled with a full-page biography are all team members: Jim “Shaky” Stanley (Player-Coach), Larry “Zip” Davis (Captain), Cleveland “Deacon” Harp (”Clown Prince of Basketball”—seen on the front-wrapper), Herky the Hobo (World’s Greatest Ball Handler), several other players, and a white twirler named Larry Patton, who performed during the Astronauts’s half-time feature and pre-game show. A blank play-card on the final page allows spectators to record field goals, free throws, and fouls for each Astronaut alongside the opposing teams members.
