London: James Imray & Son, 89 and 102, Minories, 1883. 8vo (8.25” x 5.25”). 64 pp., 9 full-page maps. CONDITION: Good, removed from sammelband with remnants of glue at spine, a few small stains affecting several pages, 1” tear to one map, last few pages foxed.

A scarce catalog produced by noted British chart publishers Imray & Son, makers of a wide range of cartographic and nautical materials.

James Imray operated one of the 19th century’s most successful chart selling companies, having begun his career as a bookseller and publisher. In 1854, his son James Frederick joined as a partner, the firm becoming Imray & Son. The company thrived due in part to the quality and character of its charts, which focused on trade routes. The business declined after James Sr.’s death in 1870, and in 1899 Imray & Son merged with Norie & Wilson.

The text begins by noting that many hydrographical surveys are presently being conducted by a range of nations including England. The firm notes it has always sought to keep pace with the rapid advance of hydrographical science and to introduce to the nautical world, as early as possible, the most recent additions and improvements in every department.

Along with charts of the world, the catalog embraces those of the following areas: England, Scotland, and Ireland; the North Sea, Kattegat, and Baltic; Norway, Lapland, and Russia; the Atlantic Ocean and its Islands; the Mediterranean; Newfoundland; North America’s West and East Coasts; the West Indies; South America, Africa’s East, West, and South Coasts; the Indian Ocean; the Indian Archipelago; Asia, China, and Japan; the Pacific Ocean; and Australia and New Zealand. Serving as indexes for the listed charts are nine maps of the Baltic, Norway, the Atlantic, the Mediterranean, South America, Indian Ocean, the Indian Archipelago, and the Pacific. The firm also sold nautical books, including sailing directories; general directories for the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans; books on navigation and astronomy, naval architecture, rigging, and seamanship; guide books for the Marine Board Examination; marine law; and miscellaneous works. Also produced by the company were log books, atlases, journals, ships’ stationary, provision books, flags, signals, and instruments (nautical, mathematical, and meteorological). Some of the instruments and wares illustrated on these pages include a marine odometer, a miniature medicine case, and Reynold’s pendant log.
