Gems of American Scenery, Consisting of Stereoscopic Views Among the White Mountains. With descriptive text.

New York: Harroun & Bierstadt, 1878. Small 8vo, original gilt-stamped brown cloth, with original brown cloth-covered stereoviewer attached to inside of front cover. [iv], [5]–99 pp., double-page map, 1 vignette illus., 24 albertype stereoviews.

A scarce work which belongs to a charming and highly unusual genre of the photographic book—the stereoscopic view book.

Illustrated with richly evocative albertype stereoviews by the Bierstadt Brothers of New Bedford, Massachusetts, with an attached stereoviewer. This is one of a mere handful of titles illustrated in this fashion, among them, another White Mountains view book by the Bierstadt Brothers—Stereoscopic Views Among the Hills of New Hampshire (New Bedford, 1862), a very rare book. The double-page map, White Mountains, drawn by H.F. Krause and “photoplated by Harroun & Bierstadt,” is printed in sepia. One portion is a detailed map of the entire White Mountains region. A smaller section shows the mountains in profile, identifying each along with its elevation.

CONDITION: Very good.
