Scenes From Uncle Tom’s Cabin No. 2. First Meeting of Uncle Tom and Eva.

New York: T. W. Strong, litho., 98 Nassau St., c. 1860. Hand-colored lithograph, 12.125” x 9.125” plus margins.

A scarce print depicting one of the key moments in Uncle Tom’s Cabin

Depicted here is Eva meeting Uncle Tom aboard a riverboat as he is being transported to New Orleans by the slave trader, Haley. Eva, the angelic child, sits on a bale of cotton, raising her to Uncle Tom’s height as he sits on a crate, his left hand on a Bible and his right arm chained. Other slaves stand in the background, observing the exchange.

Stowe’s novel, published in 1852, proved immediately and immensely popular and was soon adapted for the stage. This popularity resulted in a great proliferation of Uncle Tom’s Cabin ephemera and iconography. Publisher and lithographer T. W. Strong published at least two Uncle Tom’s lithographs—the present image and Scenes From Uncle Tom’s Cabin No. 1. Perilous Escape of Eliza and Child.

A scarce lithograph of an iconic episode in Stowe’s highly influential novel.

CONDITION: Good, loss to surface of paper in margins with some reinforcement on verso with Japanese tissue, but image unscathed and very good.
