A Statistical View of the District of Maine; More Especially with Reference to the Value and Importance of the Interior.

Boston: Published by Cummings and Hilliard, at the Boston Bookstore, No. 1, Cornhill, 1816. 8vo, original blue paper-covered boards and white paper spine. 154 pp. Early ink daye of 1816 at head of upper cover.

In this “Statistical View,” published as a companion volume to his seminal Map of the District of Maine, Greenleaf attempted to provide a geographic and economic overview of Maine, which at the time remained a district of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Greenleaf focused on the interior portion of the District, believing it to be poorly understood and of great potential benefit to Massachusetts “by judicious and efficient measures in opening the way and directing the attention of settlers to it.”
