Opposition! Fare Reduced! Great Through Route to Cincinnati, Louisville, St. Louis and New Orleans by the Way of Buffalo & Sandusky.

An attractive illustrated broadside advertising the reduction of fares—evidently prompted by popular outcry or “opposition”—on a new “Great Through Route” via steamer and rail between Buffalo and New Orleans.

The steamers Mississippi and St. Lawrence, were completed in 1854 for the Great Through Route, and their combined service offered almost daily passage from Buffalo to Sandusky, where passengers could board the Mad River & Lake Erie Railroad or the Hamilton & Dayton Rail Road to Cincinnati. From there, the steamers Alvin Adams and David White carried travelers to Louisville, whence they could journey onwards to St. Louis or New Orleans.

Illustrations show a train and a steamer, and all connections are detailed at the bottom of the broadside, with advisories about departure times and baggage. Key travel times—twelve hours from Buffalo to Sandusky, and seven from Sandusky to Cincinnati—are listed, as are three fares, each including meals and state rooms: from Buffalo to Louisville (for $6.00); from Buffalo to Sandusky (reduced from $3.75 to $2.50); and from Buffalo to Cincinnati (down from $8.00 to $4.00).
