Mason Crum (1887–1980) was born in the South Carolina coastal plain and grew up close to Gullah culture. Crum served as a faculty member in the Department of Religion at Duke University between 1930 and 1957, specializing in Christianity and race relations in the South, with an emphasis on the social history of Gullah communities.
