How to Get a Valuable Pocket Map of Any State From Maine to California of a Map of the United States, or Map of Any of the Principal Cities.

An unrecorded broadside issued by The Buffalo Express advertising a complimentary pocket map with any new subscription of at least 50 cents to the daily, weekly, or illustrated editions of the paper.

New subscribers were offered the choice between a map of any U.S. state, one of its major cities, the nation in full, or one of two regional maps of Canada. These maps are described as “printed on bond paper, in seven colors[,] put up in neat pocket cases.” Each map depicted counties, towns, rivers, railroads, post offices, historical notes, population statistics, manufacturing, and featured a “young encyclopedia of statistics and information.” The text concludes by noting “you can make money securing NEW subscribers to THE EXPRESS and offering the choice of these splendid maps as a premium.” We find no evidence that The Buffalo Express published these or any other maps. Presumably, they were supplied by a local vendor. 

The Buffalo Express was founded in 1846. Mark Twain served as its editor from 1869 to 1871. The Express merged with the Buffalo Courier in 1926 to form the Buffalo Courier-Express, which closed in 1982.
