North of Boston.

South Freeport, Me.: Ascensius Press, 2014. 4to, full brown calf, gilt title, publisher’s initials, date and rules on spine. 43 ff., 3 digital laser photographic illus. Text set in Times Roman, titles printed in brown, body of poems in black. Bound by Gray Parrot of Hancock, Maine, housed in a brown cloth tray case with a gilt-stamped, dark brown calf title label on spine.

Centennial edition. Limited to 41 copies, 26 being lettered copies bound in full calf. This copy letter “K.” With two evocative photographic illustrations by Larry Hayden, one illustrating Home Burial and the other After Apple Picking. The third illustration, which appears at the head of the colophon page, reproduces an inscribed photograph of Frost seated in his writing chair, circa 1915. The compass-point emblem of Joseph Blumenthal’s Spiral Press (which printed numerous works by Frost) is blind-stamped on the half-title and printed in brown on the title page.

A fine Centennial tribute to this important volume of poems, which includes the highly regarded Mending Wall, The Death of the Hired Man, Home Burial, After Apple Picking and The Wood-Pile. Printer/publisher Scott Vile’s choice of a narrow quarto format, which beautifully accommodates the longish poems in this collection, and his unerring typographic eye, make this a highly satisfying volume that arguably puts Frost in a form he has long deserved but never quite been given.
