Manual of the Panorama of the Battle of Shiloh. Michigan Avenue, between Madison and Monroe Streets, Chicago.
Chicago: A. T. Andreas, Publisher, 602 Opera House, 1885. 8vo (23.5 cm x 15 cm), pictorial lithographic wrappers. 15 pp., 1 ad, 1 double-page map (20 cm x 27.5 cm), 1 folding circular view (38 cm x 40 cm). A guide to the panoramic painting of the Battle of Shiloh—one of the bloodiest engagements of the Civil War—exhibited in Chicago in 1885, including a map and a circular bird’s eye view. The most salient feature of this guidebook is the fold-out circular view of the battle, as depicted in the painting, consisting of vignettes of the conflict and a key at the center. Some twenty-nine entities are listed and depicted, among them Gen. Grant and staff, Gen. Prentiss and staff, Gen. W. H. L. Wallace, Col. McPherson, various fallen officers, the 14th Iowa, Hickenlooper’s Battery, and much more. Also included is a double-page topographical map entitled, “Map of the Battle Field of Shiloh, from surveys made for The Shiloh Panorama Co., Chicago, by F. J. McIntosh, C. E., 1884.” This richly detailed map depicts the battle lines, creeks and rivers, roads, various batteries, headquarters, camps, troop transports and gunboats on the Tennessee River, and much more. McIntosh conducted an extensive survey of the battlefield, creating not only this map but also a cast of the topography which was available for purchase in bronze, enameled bronze, or papier-maché, as advertised on page seven. The text consists of two sections, one entitled “The Hornet’s Nest” (no author credited), describing the circumstances at the site of some the battle’s most intensive fighting, and the other entitled “Battle of Shiloh,” by L. B. Crooker, Captain of the 55th Illinois Infantry, providing an overview. The front wrapper illustration depicts General Grant and his staff on horseback, with fallen and fighting soldiers in the foreground. The back wrapper illustrates the Charge of the First Arkansas Confederate Infantry in the Hornet’s Nest. CONDITION: Good, lightly worn and soiled, 2.5 cm split at head and foot of spine, 1.5 cm chip at upper left corner of back wrapper (the chip is still present, affixed to the last page); map and view very good.
