Brown Brothers, photographers.

Imported Cigars.

1482 Broadway, N. Y., [ca. 1925]. Silver-print photograph (9.5” x 7.5” plus margins), photographer’s stamp, pencil production notes and red probable ownership stamp on verso.

An evocative photograph of a cigar store Indian looking rather stranded on a New York City street, his hand held to his forehead as he scans the scene before him, as if searching for the land that once was his. A tailor’s sign hangs next door, reading in part “Silk Hats Ironed.”

The Brown Brothers were known as the first New York City stock photo agency; founded in 1904, the firm sold photos to newspapers. Their work is sometimes compared to that of Lewis Hine. Among their most notable photos are those of Ellis Island immigrants, Houdini, Mark Twain, Teddy Roosevelt and the N. Y. C. Triangle Shirt Factory fire.

CONDITION: Good with strong tonality, light creases at edges.
