Los Angeles, California: Paramount Productions, 1933. 18 original photos, 8 x 10 (including margins). Production numbers in margins; captions and dates on verso.

A delightful collection of seventeen publicity photos for Paramount Studio’s 1933 production of Alice in Wonderland, starring Charlotte Henry.

A blend of publicity poses and behind the scenes shots, these images picture numerous costumed characters, including Humpty Dumpty (“after the fall was over”); Alice studying her lines (while the crew “arranges another setup”); the “ugly” Duchess; Alice, Duchess, and the Cook (just before mayhem breaks out); Tweedledee and Tweedledum rehearsing lines with director Norman McLeod, and the pair standing gut-to-gut and cigarette-to-cigarette; Alice and the Dodo bird; the White King, White Queen and other chess characters at a hearth; Alice and the Red and White Queens; the Frog and Alice (with numerous crew members and equipment visible); as well as individual portraits of the Red Queen, the Cook, the Fish, the White Queen, and the Dormouse. The captions tend to be humorous and compliment the photos with an insider’s view of the making of the movie, for example—“Whaddaty Wanta Make Them Eyes At Me For? Of course you’d never know it’s him but Sterling Holloway—the lazy-voiced comedian—is located somewhere underneath the Frog Mask pictured here, which he wore for this movie.” Images are variously dated Oct. 16, 23, 25, and Nov. 18, 1933. One image—not from the movie—is a publicity shot of Charlotte Henry posing with a snowman.

Norman McLeod (1898–1964) directed this movie immediately after directing two Marx Brothers movies, Monkey Business (1931) and Horse Feathers (1932). In addition to Charlotte Henry, the all-star cast included well-known actors such as W.C. Fields, Cary Grant, Gary Cooper, and Edward Everett Horton. Other cast members included Edna May Oliver, Louise Fazenda, Lillin Harmer, Alison Skipworth, Roscoe Karns, Jackie Searle, and Jack Oakie.

CONDITION: Good, a few photos stained, soiled, or creased, mostly in margins, all photos with strong tonality.
