An importer’s guide to fifty-nine European and American Mineral Waters, listing the available waters “kept constantly fresh, on hand”; also describing the thermal and cold spring sources, presenting in tables the carbonate, sulphur, etc. composition of each product, and testifying to the medicinal value of each water for specific diseases.

Most of the spring sources mentioned were in Hungary, Germany, France and Saratoga, New York. These include Apollinaris, Gerolstein, French Vichy, Poland Spring [Maine], and Saratoga High Rock Mineral Waters. Scherer notes that Gerolstein “is of the highest value in all forms of indigestion and dyspepsia from over-indulgence in heavy meals, wines, spirits, etc.…Poland Spring Water has cured numerous cases of Bright’s disease of the kidneys as well as…diabetes, scrofula, dropsy, etc.” Saratoga first bottled waters for export in 1826, with minerals said to be “effectual in diseases of the liver, spleen and skin; also neuralgia, rheumatic and synoptic troubles.”
