Bucksport, ME: The Home and Community Welfare Committee; printed by Bucksport Printing Co., 1938. 8vo, gray wrappers with title in red. 48 pp., [10] pp. ads, 1 p. color illus. CONDITION: Loss to much of paper at lower half of spine, wrappers soiled, various stains mainly to margins of contents, short tears and a bit of chipping to one fore-edge.

A scarce collection of recipes for such foods as War Cake (lots of raisins), Bamburries, Suet Pudding, Lemon Chiffon Pie, Potato Fudge, Jellied Beet and Cabbage Salad, Tried and True Sausage, Mock Chicken Pie, Pung Chow (crab), Piccalilli, Lindberg Special (a cole slaw), etc. Also included are household suggestions. The recipes were compiled by the Green Mountain Pomona Grange committee from Hancock County, Maine granges in Lamoine, Schoodic, Greenwood, Bayside, Mariaville, and Nicolin. A full page color illus. promotes Swans Down Cake Flour with the phrase “Even a bride can bake like a champion...BUT ...not with ordinary flour.” Inspiring household tips include “To take out rust spots, wet, rub on cream of tartar and place in sun.”; Grass stains? Cover with butter and place in the sun. “To darn stockings, put a piece of mosquito netting over the hole and darn through the meshes.” The majority of ads at the conclusion are for Ellsworth businesses, and promote cabins, cottages, live bait, a dance band, the trades, hospital, etc. Four pages of ads are bound upside down.

Originating as a Farmer’s Club in the 1850s, the Grange organization (officially known as the Patrons of Husbandry) came to Maine in 1873, offering collaborative opportunities such as group purchasing, insurance, political advocacy, continuing education, and fund-raising. The Pomona Grange still operates nationally today at a county level.
