Later annotations in ink at verso reading “The Buckminster House, NW on Islington & Bridge Sts. Portsmouth, N.H. Built 1720 by Daniel Wamer[?]. Purchased 1792 by Col. Eliphalit Ladd (1744–1806). In 1810, Rev. Dr. Jos. Buckminster mar. Ladd’s widow for his third wife. Scene – looking west on Islington St.” CONDITION: Very good, strong tonality, slight curve to mount, verso of mount faded to pink. A view of the Buckminister house, built in 1720, with a timeline of ownership written at verso. Photographers Charles and Lewis Davis, born in Ripley, Maine, operated their Portsmouth studio (Davis Brothers) from 1856–1903, producing portraits, cartes-de-visite, cabinet cards, and stereoviews. 160 of their photographs were published in the book, “Around Portsmouth in the Victorian Era” (1997) by James Dolph and Ronan Donohoe.
