[Portsmouth, N.H., ca. 1875]. Albumen print stereoview, 3.75” x 6.375” plus mount. Photographer’s credit at right edge, series name, “Portsmouth and Vicinity,” at left edge. Later annotations in ink at verso reading “The Buckminster House, NW on Islington & Bridge Sts. Portsmouth, N.H. Built 1720 by Daniel Wamer[?]. Purchased 1792 by Col. Eliphalit Ladd (1744–1806). In 1810, Rev. Dr. Jos. Buckminster mar. Ladd’s widow for his third wife. Scene – looking west on Islington St.” CONDITION: Very good, strong tonality, slight curve to mount, verso of mount faded to pink.

Photographers Charles and Lewis Davis, born in Ripley, Maine, operated their Portsmouth studio (Davis Brothers) from 1856–1903, producing portraits, cartes-de-visite, cabinet cards, and stereoviews. 160 of their photographs were published in the book, “Around Portsmouth in the Victorian Era” (1997) by James Dolph and Ronan Donohoe.
