Portsmouth, N.H., [ca. 1875]. Stereoview, 3.75” x 6.5” plus mount. Photographer’s credit at right edge (largely covered by photo.), series name, “Portsmouth and Vicinity,” at left edge. Later annotations in ink and pencil at verso reading “Haymarket Sq., Porstmouth, N.H. Looking outbound[?] on Middle St. Middle St. Baptist Church on extreme right margin, now gone by fire. Ebenezer Thompsen/Alfred Runlith House on left margin. 147 Middle Street.” CONDITION: Very good, slight curve to mount, sunning at top corners, verso faded to pink. An image of Haymarket Square in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, showing the Middle Street Baptist Church, which was subsequently lost to a fire, and the Ebenezer Thompson/Alfred Runleth House that once stood at 147 Middle Street. Photographers Charles and Lewis Davis, born in Ripley, Maine, operated their Portsmouth studio (Davis Brothers) from 1856–1903, producing portraits, cartes-de-visite, cabinet cards, and stereoviews. 160 of their photographs were published in the book, “Around Portsmouth in the Victorian Era” (1997) by James Dolph and Ronan Donohoe.
