Folio, early full limp vellum, manuscript title at spine reading “Dante opere.” [28], 163, [4], 164–392 ff., woodcut profile portrait of Dante within ornamental frame incorporating angels and putti on title page, 96 woodcut illustrations, headpieces, ornamental initials, Sessa tailpiece of cat at end. Leaf 106 (O3) mis-numbered 103; leaf 288 (NN8) mis-numbered 286, leaf 322 (SS2) mis-numbered 320, leaf 388 (CCC4) misnumberd 288. CONDITION: Good, binding toned and rippled, a few small reinstated loses at spine; loss to blank area on title page just above portrait expertly reinstated, discreet paper repair to vertical tear running half the length of B2 from top, six inch long loss to lower right margin of leaf 125 (Q5), occasional toning, light foxing, small losses to margins, short tears, and minor stains, but generally quite clean and intact. The 1578 edition of this work first published by Sessa in 1564, known by the sobriquet “al gran naso” for the woodcut portrait of Dante in profile. An important, early critical edition of the Divine Comedy, edited by Francesco Sansovino (1521–1583) who brought together in this volume the commentary of Christopher Landino, first published in Florence, 1481, with that of Alessandro Vellutello, published by Francesco Marcolini in Venice, 1544. The illustrations, which first appeared in the Vellutello edition and were printed from the same blocks, are possibly by Giovanni Britto, an engraver employed by Marcolini.
