[Women in the Wind, Dakota Territory.]

Dolan, Dakota, [ca. 1887]. Stereoview, 3.8” x 6.25”, photographer’s stamp on verso. CONDITION: Very good, a few tiny indentations to the image, one light mark to right image, light rubbing to right margin, light scuffing to verso.

An evocative image of three women out for a stroll on the windswept prairie in Doland, Dakota Territory, one woman holding a crumpled umbrella.

Another known photograph by H. F. Quiggle, posted to a public Facebook group dedicated to Doland, South Dakota, shows the woman on the far right in the present image holding the same black wind-crumpled umbrella, and was clearly taken at the same time. A period inscription below the image reads, “Witch of the Prairie.”

H. F. Quiggle was active from at least 1886 to 1912 in Dakota Territory and South Dakota. He is also known to have worked in Wisconsin and taken images of Native Americans. From the 1900s to the 1910s, Quiggle worked in the partnership Quiggle & Johnson with C. W. Johnson, operating out of Rapid City, South Dakota.
