First French edition. Includes two signed notes by Beston from 1960 on Chimney Farm notecards. Both addressed to Jasper Jacob Stahl, a historian of Waldoboro, Maine. First note reads “Dear Jasper, Thank you a world for your warm and erudite congratulations. When I saw a letter from you in the mail, I knew that I should be living in my own atmosphere of learning, and the graces of life. I am very much a believer with A.E. Housman that accuracy is a duty. Bless you, dear Jasper, for the warmly friendly words! The first medal I ever got at the Quincy Adams Academy had its motto from Cicero ‘verbo animi profere’ [bring forth your soul’s voice] Isn’t it a fine saying? I won it for public speaking. Cheerio and every good thing to you. Amicalement, Henry per ECB [Elisabeth Coates Beston, wife of the author, the note apparently dictated to her]!” Second note reads “A. Jasper Stahl Ami et voisin, Homages et amitiés de l’auteurs, H.B [to Jasper Stahl, friend and neighbor, respects and friendship of the author, H.B.]”
