[Photograph of a youth gospel group at practice.]

[U.S., ca. 1940]. Original silver print photograph, 6.5” x 9.25” plus margins. CONDITION: Good, some scuffing and stains but with little effect on image, crease to lower right corner.

A captivating image of a youth gospel group of the mid-twentieth century, apparently showing them at practice with the church pianist—a typical scene out of the fertile musical tradition of the Black church.

This evocative photo, seemingly taken in a church music room, shows a woman seated at the pianoforte and nineteen adolescent singers standing or seated beside her. Some of the singers smile, and at least two girls wear cornrows in their hair. The singers all wear robes and some wear sashes, two of which are lettered “S. P.,” possibly providing clues to their location. On the wall behind the group is an image of Christ facing a beam of light descending from the sky, and a poster above the piano pictures a white nun and reads, appropriately, “God bless the children."
