Sm 4to (9.75” x 6.25”), three-quarter pebbled brown leather, black cloth, gilt spine, 5 raised bands, gilt name of original owner “Mrs. F.J. Enz” at foot of spine. vii, 1–816 pp., 211 engraved illus. CONDITION: Good, spine and covers moderately rubbed, small worm-hole at upper right corner of back cover along edge of spine, paper split at front inner hinge but cover firmly attached, 2” split in paper at upper end of rear inner hinge, worming to upper right corner of flyleaf and subsequent 27 leaves with no effect on printed area.
The December 1866 issue contains the first appearance of a story by Mark Twain in a magazine, “Forty-three Days in an Open Boat,” printed under his misprinted nom-de-plume “Mark Swain.”
