Frontis., xxxv, [blank], half-title, 406 pp. CONDITION: Very good, some rubbing at extremities, text clean, binding tight; dj good, 2” split at lower right of front panel, 2” split at lower right of rear panel, short tears at edges.

First edition, containing “thirty-five essays, letters, travel pieces, and newspaper articles–all of which were first published or reprinted in the United States in book form. The volume was compiled posthumously by Twain’s literary executor, Albert Bigelow Paine…While this eclectic collection exhibits no unifying theme as such, it does demonstrate Twain’s wide-ranging interest, concerns, and views, as well as his sense of despair and alienation…the value of these pieces to contemporary Twain studies lies in their reflection of the author’s political, social, and religious attitudes” (Kinch).
