First edition, first printing of Berryman’s uncommon second book. Inscribed by Berryman to poet and Princeton professor Charles Bell: “Charles affectionately John” and “Princeton[,] so late as to say Merry Christmas Dec 1948.” Bell was a colleague of Berryman’s at Princeton and an influential poet/teacher. Among his students were W. S. Merwin and Galway Kinnell. The latter accompanied Bell when he left to teach at Black Mountain College.
