A scarce broadside issued by the Union Pacific Railway, advertising guided excursions for New Englanders to “go and see” the riches of Nebraska, at the height of the state’s land grant boom.

Residents of St. Johnsbury, Vermont are here urged to “Go West”—or at least to think about it, by joining a guided excursion to “the Rich Farming Lands of The Union Pacific R. R. in Central and Eastern Nebraska.” Excursions would run monthly, and the “special train” advertised here would leave St. Johnsbury on August 16th, going first to Montreal and then, “accompanied by a competent guide,” into the “Better Lands, Better Climate, and Better Markets” of Central Nebraska. “Ex-Soldiers” are particularly encouraged to join (“go to the Union Pacific R. R. for…Homestead and Timber claims”) but all prospective emigrants are promised a pleasant trip on “Special Cars,” with “check baggage and…full information regarding the Routes, Lands, etc.” The Union Pacific Land Commissioner in Omaha, Leavitt Burnham, and of the General Land Agent in St. Johnsbury, A. C. Harvey, are named at the foot of the broadside—both ready to furnish “full information, maps, guides, etc.” to all inquirers.
